CLIL unit planning
Hello!
For some time now I've been planning my CLIL unit. The topic is "life of the planet depends on people". The topic itself gave me many ideas of what can be done in it, but the deeper I dug the more did I realize how difficult it will be to create it and conduct it in first grade.
In the beginning, I wanted to give lots of science and nature, climate zones, plants, animals, some astronomy...but then I thought oh, that will be too difficult, those are only first graders! So I went to the process of planning again and again. Now I have it all on paper, ready to use, but still, I have some doubts about it. Without the deep knowledge of students, it's hard to say what will work and what will not, so I had this thought that our practicum is not really well planned. if we could spend some stable time at school, for example, one whole semester it would be much easier. But then, who would accept us to spend so much time in the classroom... Nevermind. We will do it somehow. The most depressing part of planning is always giving detailed information on objectives (language, content, cognition, culture). It takes so much time!
Then the problem appears when u realize how many things you have to prepare, buy, create... I'm still struggling with this one. It takes lots, lots of time. It's tiring and combining it together with the university it gets hard to do anything.
But enough of complaining.
I will tell you more about my unit. So as I said, the topic is the life of the planet depends on people. I've decided to conduct 5 lessons on the main things such as why can we live on Earth? What are some ecological problems caused by humans, what is waste segregation and recycling? And the fifth lesson is a summary of station work. I've realized how many things I don't know myself...so I will have to educate myself on this :D
The first lesson will start with the Solar System, planets, and factors thanks to which our planet is special! We will talk about oxygen, water, Sun... and then we will conduct an experiment! To show students why oxygen is so important, because then, in the second lesson we will talk about smog, deforestation, and other things that make the air dirty and destroy the natural balance. From the natural problems caused by humans, we will move to how we can make it better- and with this, I mean waste segregation. We will talk about different colors of bins, what do they mean, why is it important to segregate. Next, I will show my students how we can recycle things that are good to be re-used by making something special out of them! But that's a secret, I will share it with you once I conduct the lesson :).
And the fifth lesson as I said will be a group work at stations. To summarize the whole unit, make students think and use their new knowledge. If we finish as I planned we will have 10 minutes for preparing posters that advertise the care for nature. Students will come up with slogans and some graphical things to make it esthetic and usable, so then we can post them around the school!
I will try to make some pictures and share with you all the results. Later on, I will also describe lessons better. That's just a plan for now.
I'm starting on Tuesday, so wish me luck and keep your fingers crossed for me~! I need it
XOXO
